What is a Saju chart?

A Saju chart is a map of the moment you were born, written in the traditional East Asian calendar. "Saju" (사주, 四柱) means "four pillars": your birth year, month, day and hour each become one pillar, and each pillar is written with two characters. That gives eight characters in all, which is why the same chart is called BaZi ("eight characters") in Chinese.

Unlike a Western horoscope, a Saju chart does not use planets or star signs. It is worked out from the calendar alone, so two people share a chart only if they were born in the same two-hour window of the same day.

The top and bottom characters
The upper character of each pillar is a Heavenly Stem (there are ten) and the lower one is an Earthly Branch (there are twelve — the same twelve as the zodiac animals). Stems show what is visible on the surface; branches show the roots underneath.
Five elements, yin and yang
Every character belongs to one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water — and is either yin or yang. A reading looks at how these elements feed, support or hold back one another in your chart, and which ones are plentiful or missing.
Your Day Master
The top character of the day pillar stands for you. It is called the Day Master, and the rest of the chart is read in relation to it: what strengthens you, what drains you, and what you are naturally drawn to.
Why the exact date and time matter
In Saju the year does not turn on 1 January. It turns at the Start of Spring, around 4 February, and each month begins at a solar term rather than on the 1st. Someone born in January therefore has the previous year's pillar. We work these boundaries out from astronomical data, to the minute.
If you do not know your birth time
Tick "I don't know my birth time". Your year, month and day pillars are still calculated, and the hour pillar is simply left blank. Your Day Master does not depend on the hour, so the core of your reading stays the same.
What you will see
Your Four Pillars in their element colours, your Day Master and what it says about your nature, your five-element balance, how strong your Day Master is, the element that helps you most, and how today's energy meets your chart.
How to take it
A Saju chart describes tendencies and timing, not a fixed fate. Read it as a mirror for understanding yourself, not as a prediction you have to follow.
